African Energy Hosts Visit of Ugandan Energy Delegation
Scottsdale, AZ – 20 Sep 04 ---- African Energy recently facilitated the visit of Honorable Syda Bumba, Minister of Energy and Mineral Development of the Republic of Uganda, together with her delegation of energy officials and stakeholders.
The delegation's stop in Arizona was part of a worldwide trip supported by the World Bank to help identify technologies and best practices for Uganda’s rural electrification. The visit included stops at the Arizona Public Service Solar STAR centre and the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA).
At the STAR Centre, the group saw a variety of solar power devices in action, ranging from huge concentrating trackers to small PV arrays and inverters. In Fort Defiance, Arizona the group spent the day at the NTUA, seeing the challenges facing a small utility catering to a dispersed, rural population. Later, the minister and her delegation visited a traditional Navajo home supplied with a PV and wind system courtesy of NTUA. The system, at the end of a dirt track in a forested area, is the sole source of electric power for the remote homestead. The remote setting and power needs are similar to those of many rural Ugandans and the situation provided an interesting comparison.
